El Puerto de Santa Maira boast many historical buildings that date back to the time of Christopher Columbus and before

El Puerto de Santa Maria, the Town of the 100 Palaces, has been declared "Heritage of Cultural Interest", it is one of the most important resorts in the coast of Cadiz. The Natural Park of the Bay of Cadiz represents its natural resource, mostly when its beaches, which total 16kms of its coast, all are of fine golden sand and are graced with more than 3.000 hours of sunlight per year.

History (eighth century BC.). According to legend, the city was founded by Menestheo; an Athenian soldier who arrived to this area after the Troja War. The first name of the city was "Menestheo port. " In 711 the Muslims won the battle against the Goths and occupied Spain. The city becomes a Muslim town with the name of "Alcanatif" . Muslim were in El Puerto de Santa Maria until 1260 when they were expluded by the King of Castilla Alfonso X who change the name of the town as "Puerto de Santa Maria" in honor of the Virgin.

Christopher Columbus stayed in the city between 1483 and 1486. The first map of America was drawn by Juan de la Cosa ( owner of Santa Maria´s ship ) in the town of El Puerto de Santa Maria, in 1500.
